collage + garment

Updated: Mar 22, 2023

utilising a Lightbox and layered images I created a large variety of collages, utilising similar images yet variations of underlying pattern and light and shadow. I then considered what I could use these designs for. I had originally created the collages with the intention to PVA print (like the ones I created in unit 1), however I was unsure as to what I would use those prints for. If I was printing on a large amount of fabric that could simply be left 'open ended' - I could theorise on all the ways I could contextualise the garment. But I decided to use the collages to PVA print specifically onto the pieces that made up a garment, basically the pattern pieces to make a 'corset' top. There was more of a focus on the textile and surface pattern itself than the construction of the garden, not that I didn't pay attention to that, I didn't include lining for the rough hessian fabric on the inside or to conceal the hand-sewing, the overall finished look being slightly rough around the edges, which merged perfectly with the graphical style of the printed fabric.
